Deep within the shadows of the dense valley bushveld of the Sundays River region of the Eastern Cape lies the Addo Elephant National Park. The original Elephant section of the park was proclaimed in 1931, when only eleven elephants remained in the area - today this finely tuned ecosystem is sanctuary to over 420 elephants, 450 buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in Addo. Lion and spotted hyena have been reintroduced to the park . Situated opposite Addo Elephant National Park, just 45 minutes from Port Elizabeth, River Bend Country Lodge offers a chance to unwind, to enjoy fine cuisine, relax in ultimate luxury and to explore the surrounding areas. Revitalise your spirit and soul, leave the city life behind and escape to the tranquil natural beauty found at River Bend Lodge. Alongside the narrow straight driveway leading to the lodge, glimpse giraffe browsing, zebra and eland grazing on the crisp succulent grasses of the tranquil Valley bushveld. Anchored on endless horizons and flanked by the Zuurberg Mountains, River Bend Lodge is situated within a 17 000 ha private concession area of the Addo Elephant National Park. This is Africa at its best – a perfect balance between the Eastern Cape bush and the sheer elegance of fine country life in a malaria free zone. Watch herds of Elephants feeding a short distance away, listen to the songs of some 250 bird species, enjoy a personalized game drive into the mountains and discover varying vegetation from thick forested valleys, open savannah plains to hillsides rich in Fynbos. Game may be viewed either in the Nyati concession to which River Bend has exclusive access, or in the original areas of the Addo Elephant National Park, which River Bend guests access through a private entrance. The colonial-style lodge and eight immaculate suites exude the finest brand of refinement and luxury. Prime cottages with steep pitches, simply gabled and roofed in cool blue grey corrugated iron. Exquisitely decorated, the eight garden suites meander alongside winding brick paths, lined with abundantly planted beds. Eight individual suites, tastefully designed, invite you to relax and enjoy incredible tranquility and privacy - a haven, worlds away from the madding crowds of modern life. All the suites are air conditioned and equipped with ceiling fans, electronic safes, mini bar, satellite TV, hair dryer and bathroom on suite with bath and shower. Be pampered to a relaxing back massage in the privacy of your room, or sip a cocktail on your private veranda as the sun sets below the endless horizon. Rest a sleepy head on feather soft comfort and let the sounds of gentle bird song wake you to another glorious day in the Addo Elephant National Park. Served in the finest colonial tradition and accompanied by carefully selected wines, the cuisine is a refreshing celebration of inspired simplicity and impeccable style. Tailor-made big game viewing opportunities in a malaria free region and numerous other activities right on our doorstep ensure a memorable stay.
